-/- tetraploid mouse mammary epithelial cells (MMECs). 10 of 39 injections of tetraploid-derived MMECs produced tumors. Injections of isogenic diploid-derived MMECs on the contralateral side of the mice did not produce tumors, demonstrating that tetraploidy may promote tumorigenesis in vivo.
Right: Haematoxyllin and eosin staining of a section of the tumors demonstrates cell morphology consistent with malignant spindle-cell carcinoma. Multinucleated giant cells, multipolar mitoses, and tumor invasion of skeletal muscle (SM) are frequently observed. Immunohistochemical labelling of smooth muscle actin and keratin-14 suggests that these mice developed malignant myopetheliomas.
